Uyo Local Government Area is the city center of Akwa Ibom State by virtue of being the state capital.

However, a trip off the express roads shows the village status of Uyo Local Government Area.

To visit a community called Nung Asang Ikono in Uyo Local Government, one has to go through Etinan Local Government Area, due to lack of access road from other communities within Uyo.

The lack of this major social amenity has hindered development in the agarian community in particular and Ikono clan in general.

Having taken into consideration, the need to open up rural areas through roads rehabilitation, the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, Friday, March 12, 2021, took a Service Alone step into Nung Asang Ikono and flagged off the grading of 3km access road in the community.

Leading officials of Uyo Local Government Council to the flag-off exercise, the Executive Chairman disclosed that the grading of 37km Nung Asang-Mbiabong-Ikot Eboro road which spans 18 villages will be done in phases and the first phase will cover 3km within Nung Asang Ikono community.

“As you have seen, Uyo Local Government Council visited Nung Asang today to flag off the grading of community road for easy access by the dwellers.

“This is part of our agenda which we promised to deliver rural areas development by opening up rural communities to enable road users transport their agricultural goods to urban areas for business.

“Nung Asang is an agarian community and if there’s no access road, members of this community cannot take their goods out to sell and take care of their families.

“It’s been over 15 years since government looked the way of Nung Asang community to bring development, however, we are here to ensure that at least, this community has an accessible road like every other community in Uyo Local Government Area.

“While coming, we passed through another local government to get here, which is not supposed to be so, hence, our visit today,” he said

Dr. Udo solicited for their cooperation and support to the completion agenda of Gov. Udom Emmanuel, while assuring that his administration would strive to introduce other life touching and people oriented projects and policies, in line with his Service Alone mantra.

“Grading of road is not the only thing that we will do for Nung Asang Ikono, there are other things that we will do, like the school which the structures are dilapidated, we will look into it,” the Executive Chairman assured.

He also commended the youths and women of Nung Asang community for their support to the state and local governments and promised to bring more development to the area subject to availability of funds.

The Village Head of Nung Asang, Chief Edet Jimmy Udofia and his subjects were elated when they saw a sitting Chairman in Council visit their community, which they described as the ‘last village in Uyo Local Government Area’.

The village head noted in his speech that Nung Asang Ikono was forgotten by successive administrations in Uyo Local Government Council but expressed appreciation to Dr. Uwemedimo Udo led administration for remembering them in the development of Ikono clan.

“I am very happy because since I was born till this point in my life time as the village head of Nung Asang Ikono, I have never seen a sitting Council Chairman visit to interact with us.

“I appreciate the fact that the Chairman came in person with the entire members of his administration to flag off the grading of this road for us. I am also happy that he is not being selective in his development agenda as we are feeling the positive impact of his administration.

“As for support, my Chairman, you can count on us because Governor Udom Emmanuel has visited our community through you, so we will support you for your administration to be successful and all the life touching policies of the state government, we will give our support,” he said.

Emmanuel led government at the state level.

The community youth leader, Mr. Aniekan Bassey expressed profound appreciation over the chairman’s gesture in redeeming his promise to the people of Uyo Local Government Area as evident in the road grading work in his community.
