According to Nelson Mandela “Education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world”. It is on this desire to affect lives that Ifako Ijaiye legislative arm ably led by Councillor Akinola Abiodun out of passion and compassion for students who are willing and determined to become somebody in life despite their poor background dolled out free GCE forms to them few months back.
The event which was held at African Church Primary School, Idi Agbon Bus stop, College Road, Ifako and was chaired by FKJ APC Caretaker Chairman, Deac. Banjo Omole, aims at helping indigent students realize their dreams of making something out of life rather than resulting to crime. The laudable programme was also meant to ameliorate the pains of parents whom due to the financial challenges could not afford to further their children’s education.
There is a maxim that says “There is no reward in getting but only in giving”. This aphorism came to the fore on the 4th February,2021 when a young girl named Miss Ogundele Oyinkansola from Ward A in the company of her mum paid a visit to the councillors to thank them for the positive impact they have made in her life with the GCE form given to her some months ago.
Oyinkansola whom we learnt will clock sixteen next month was one of the fortunate beneficiaries of The Free GCE forms. Oyinkansola could not hold back her tears of joy as she profusely thanked the councillors for giving her a renewed hope to aspire to be someone in life.
She proceeded to tell the councillors how she had cleared her papers and made a good score in the GCE & JAMB respectively. She attributed her successes to the quality of teachings she and her mates received in the extra moral tutorial classes put together by the councillors immediately they were given the free forms.
She further revealed that she had been offered an admission to study Theatre and Performing Art at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye. She made a solemn promise to take her studies very seriously and make her beloved parents and the councillors very proud at the end of her studies. She appealed to the councillors not to relent on the good works they’re doing and she prayed for God’s protection over them.
Mrs. Ogundele, mother of the girl was beaming with Joy while her daughter spoke said that ‘Donating forms to the youth in the community free of charge is commendable and a step that is worthy of emulation’. She then went on to appreciate the councillors for coming in to ameliorating the effect of the economy on her family at a time when it seems there was no more hope. She thanked them for giving her daughter a reason to believe in herself again. She also prayed for greater attainments for all the councillors, the local government chairman and other stakeholders in the LGA.
Leader of the house, Councillor Abiodun Akinola while speaking said that his main vision is to see to it that the youths are adequately empowered so that they could contribute their quota in moving the community to the next level.
He said and I quote “If I give you food items or money, I might not be as happy as I am with what is happening here today”. The leader then appreciated the Almighty God for finding him worthy to affect lives. He further admonished the lucky girl not to be distracted by worldly activities on campus and promised that the house will support her financially.
Earlier in his address, deputy leader of the house who doubles as the chairman House Committee on Education, Hon. Victor Onifade expressed satisfaction with this development. He also called on the girl to be focused and be goal oriented.
It was a spectacle to behold as all the seven councillors in attendance started an impromptu donation spree for Miss Oyinkanso
