Palpable tension has enveloped some Imo State communities as a result of persistent Fulani herdsmen attacks and consequent killings.
It was further learnt that the herdsmen have been marauding and killing innocent indigenes of the said communities in Imo State and other South East communities in general for quite a long time.
Particular case in study is murder of one Elder Ozoemena Iriaka who had gone to his farm one early morning where he met some Fulani herdsmen grazing their cattle on his farm had confronted them for grazing their cattle on his farm only to be attacked and subsequently killed by the herders.
It was gathered that the deceased had tried to chase away the catles from his farm, an action which did not go down well with the herdsmen who attacked him with their machetes, inflicting deep cuts on his head as he tried to escape.
The youths of the community of Aku where Elder Ozoemena Ariaka hailed from mobilized and caught up with the herdsmen whom they handed over to the Police at Oguta Police division.
According to our source, Mr Declan Odime Okaru, an indigene of the community, Elder Ozoemena Iriaka was attacked and killed by Fulani Herdsmen whom he had challenged for grazing their cows on his farm.
He lamented that the herdsmen have been in the habit of grazing their cows on the farms in the community.
He added, ‘those herdsmen have been in the habit of grazing their cows on the farms of the people of this community and when the people challenge them they will attack and subsequently kill them.’
The herdsmen moves around in the communities with their castles and are always well armed. They invade farmlands and destroy crops, and on several occasions have reportedly raped unsuspecting women.
This unjust act have been going on unreported for quite a long time as the people now live in constant fear of the invaders.
The Amnesty International was said to have recorded and condemned this act as a total violation of human rights on the part of the herdsmen.
Again, it was learnt that the people of the said communities have been calling on the government to come to their aid over this senseless killing and abuse for many years, but no action has been taken to that effect.
It was gathered that the people have reportedly lost confidence in the government rescue and protect them and their properties as law abiding citizens of the country.
Hence the people of affected communities decided to defend themselves from the continued attacks and killings in the hands of the herdsmen which led to confrontation with the herders that eventually resulted into violent clash were few lives of human and cattle were lost and injuries sustained.
Following the ugly incidence, many people were arrested by the Police and has declared the following persons directly involved in the crisis wanted, One Mr. Benjamin Chidobi Ekwelem Of Isialla Mbano , Mr. Timothy Ebere Njoku of Aku Villiage and Mr. Prince Okechukwu Onuoha of Aku Villiage.
While these was going on, there was report that the herdsmen were hounding the people of these communities and the people has abandoned their homes and flee for their dear lives
