SANITATION COURT CONVICTS ENVIRONMENTAL LAW OFFENDERS IN A’IBOM

Not less than 25 persons were convicted on today by the Sanitation Court sitting at Eyo Eduok Street, Uyo, for loitering and failing to participate in the monthly environmental Exercise in Akwa Ibom State.
Reading out the verdict, the Presiding Magistrate who convicted the defaulters of various charges irrespective of excuses and please, reaffirmed that those paraded before the court for loitering during an environmental exercise, had committed offense under Section 4(m) which is punishable under section 38 of the Akwa Ibom State Public health law CAP 103, VOL 5 of 2000. He further described their failure to obey the State Environmental laws as unfortunate and baseless. 
Some of the defaulters who pleaded not guilty were granted bail. 
Recall that the Akwa Ibom State Government, through a release signed by the Honorable Commisioner for information and Strategy- Sir Charles Udoh, had warned that “to ensure effectiveness of the environmental exercise, there would be  RESTRICTION of human and vehicular movements across the State between between 7 and 10am of Saturday, February 29, 2020”.   Meanwhile, the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste management Agency – Obong Prince Ikim, while speaking with journalists Shortly after the exercise, described the turnout for the monthly sanitation as massive and impressive. 
The AKSEPWMA Boss while appreciating passion radio in particular, also thanked Akwa Ibom State house of Assembly committee on Environment, Nigeria Medical Association, Nigeria Environmental Society, Itu Local Government Council, NGOs, individuals, corporate organizations and construction companies, for partnering with his Agency to ensure a successful environmental sanitation exercise. 
Noting that the prosecution in court was to serve as a deterrent to others as Governor Udom Emmanuel-led Administration remained steadfast towards promoting public hygiene, Ikim urged all citizens and residents of the State to always join hands in keeping Akwa Ibom Clean and green. According to the Former council Boss of Oruk Anam, the post sanitation exercise continues till Tuesday, with a mob-up exercise on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.
