Lady Gaga on Her Song ‘Til It Happens to You’: ‘I Wanted It to Be Empowering’

“I’ll be thinking of u 2nite,” she tweeted to Kesha before the show. “This is not over we’ll stand by u until you are free to live a HAPPY life. Everyone deserves that.”

The singer has now taken to social media several times to support Kesha during her legal battle with Dr. Luke, whom Kesha alleges raped and abused her. She even asked Sony to drop Dr. Luke in light of Kesha’s accusations, urging the major label to “do what is RIGHT not what is better for business.” On Feb. 19, a judge denied Kesha’s injunction bid to record outside of Dr. Luke’s purview under Kemosabe Records, a subsidiary of Sony. Dr. Luke spoke out after the court date, tweeting that he “didn’t rape Kesha and I have never had sex with her.”

Lady Gaga and Warren co-wrote “Til It Happens to You” for The Hunting Ground, a documentary about rape on college campuses. Rumors had circulated that Warren would be joining Gaga onstage for a performance of the song at the Oscars, but Warren denied the report.

“This nomination lends a voice to victims & survivors all over the world,” Gaga wrote on Twitter upon learning that the song was up for the award. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the movement of people who have come together for this film & song in the name of sexual assault. Myself and Diane are simply honored to represent the voices of so many survivors.”

On a lighter note, Lady Gaga also shared her hope that Leonardo DiCaprio will take home an award at this year’s Oscars. He’s blessed us w/ years of his storytelling, he deserves this! #1!!” Gaga tweeted.
